Q: Volkswagen Jetta?
Is the Volkswagen Jetta a good car? I heard that after 1995 they became lemons-is this true? I really love these cars, and would like to consider buying one next year, but a relatively problem-free car is of great importance to me!

A: they all complain about “problems” but not a single one is listed.

They are repeating urban legends. The Jetta is a decent reliable car. Are you looking for New? 100K warranty so what is the fear. Lots of shops specialize in them so you aren’t pinned to the dealer for maintenance anyway.

ASE Cert Auto tech, 92 GTI16V 2.0L- A total problem car(hahahahahahahahahahahahaha)

Q: Volkswagen jetta?
a 2000 Volkswagen jetta with mileage of 108,216 is $4,400.00 a good price for it

A: Depending what COULD be wrong with it. Get a Carfax report first of all. The KBB of a stock, Jetta GL is $8,000 retail. I would check the car over carefully, a lot of students buy VW’s and a lot of students crash them. Run your fingers down the inside of body panels to check for paint bumps.. paint bumps = painting. Painting means it was probably in an accident of some sort. Tap the doors and listen for body filler, is there a dull sound or does it sound like metal? I have owned many VW’s and 4,400 sounds like a good price.. but it could have some problems. Hope this helps.

Q: volkswagen jetta?
im having leak probelm in my jetta and need someone to tell me where can i get it fixed do i have to go to the dealership because the left and right side r soak of water this is coming from the back area PLEASE HELP ME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :(

A: Take it to a good mechanic, not the dealer.

If you have a sun roof, it could be clogged drains there.

Or one of the door drains could be clogged.

Or a leak around the rear window.

Q: Where can I get a volkswagen Jetta toy car?
I need a model car (1:48 size or smaller) of a volkswagen Jetta. Has anyone seen this, or a car that looks similar enough and know where I can get them?
I did an ebay search, no dice. Any other suggestions?

A: online ebay, search die cast cars in collectables or toys

Q: Should I buy a used or a new Volkswagen jetta?
I would like to buy a Volkswagen jetta. I found a 2006 value pack Jetta with 22500 miles at a dealership (not VW) for sale at $15,200. However, If I am not wrong, I can buy a brand new value pack Jetta for about $18,000 or so. I am not sure if spending few $$ more for a new car is better than buying the used one. Any suggestions?

A: If the options are the same, get the used one.

Q: what do the warning lights mean on my 2003 Volkswagen Jetta?
I have a 2003 Volkswagen Jetta with a warning light on I’ve never seen before. I’d like to know if there is a website that has specific information about these lights. Ideally, I’d like to find something that has a picture and description of what each warning light means. I do not have the owners manual. In case anyone knows, this light is a solid green circle with green dashes in a half circle on either side of the solid circle.
Correction. The lights are yellow, not green.

A: That light is a front brake warning light. There are sensors in the brake pads which activate that light if they detect weaking brake activity in the front. You should go and have that checked out.

Q: Why does your 2000 Volkswagen Jetta make a rattling noise when accelerating?
My 2000 Volkswagen Jetta makes a rattling noise when I am accelerating or just wating at stop light. The belt was replace few months ago. I tried to looked if there was something broken, but I didn’t find anything. It is a pain when you drive a car with rattlling noise. I need help and if you know anything about this problem please let me know what should be done.
Thanks

A: It is your heat shield either on your cat. or the top of your exhaust manifold. A very common problem. The one on top of the cat. can be removed but the one on the exhaust manifold will need a tack weld.

Q: How to replace key ignition switch 1991 Volkswagen Jetta?
I’m getting a 1991 Volkswagen Jetta later this week and the problem is it needs a key ignition switch. All I can find online is them without the keys. So what do I do have a locksmith come and make keys for the new one?
How much does this usually cost? Should I have the dealership do it instead? How much do you think they would charge?

A: You need to get a Bentley or a Haynes as they show you the Measurements to drill the hard pins out to take the lock Cylinder out of the steering lock.

To replace the electrical switch, you will need to remove the knee pad bar, the steering wheel (if air bag equipped) you have to disconnect the battery for 20 minutes prior.

You have to be carefull about the clock spring and be sure that you mark it prior to removal.
You then can take the 2 covers off the steering shaft to see the electrical switch.

There is more like removing the turn signal stalks and such as I am more familiar to a cabby then a jetta.

If you call a lock smith they will usually charge between 100-200 bucks. If your door key is the same as the ignition, you can remove a door handle and take it to the locksmith to have the key made without a house call.

Q: How to use cruise control on a Volkswagen Jetta?
So I bought a Volkswagen Jetta 2000, and no user manual came with it. I noticed that VW cruise control looks different (they’re not on the steering wheel like many cars I have driven, but on a handle to the left side). If anyone know how to use it, let me know, a bit more detail will be appreciated (ie: how to set cruise on, resume, coast, accelerate)

A: First off, ignore darren’s stupid comment. On the left hand side stalk, slide the lever to on all the way to the far end of the stalk, to shut it off, slide it all the way in. Next, accelerate to the speed you want to cruise at. On the end of the stalk there is a button, press that button in and let off the gas. Cruise is set, and if I recall on the 2000’s a light goes on indicating cruise, i.e. coast. Now, to accelerate with the cruise on you have two options. Hit the accelerator pedal and when you let off it, it will resume to your preset speed. Or, press the set button in, and it will accelerate or tap it at regular intervals. It will resume at the set speed.

Q: How much would a transmission job cost for a 87 Volkswagen Jetta?
How much would a transmission job cost for a 87 Volkswagen Jetta?

A: Let’s say it’s $2,000. Is it worth it? Trans jobs never turn out right. You’d be better putting the money toward a new small car like a Corolla, a Golf, a Scion tC, or something similar. The dealer should give you $500 for the Jetta even with trans trouble. If they don’t, go to another dealer.

Q: Mazda protege or volkswagen jetta as a first car?
I am going to buy my first car and i am undecieded on which car to choose. A 2001 mazda protege lx 2.0 or a 2002 volkswagen jetta gls 2.0. I like both cars but am not sure. What do you think?

A: I would go with the Jetta because you will get way more bang for your buck! And I don’t mean BANG as in your car will break down lol!

The Jetta has more of a solid feel and better quality overall. I believe (don’t quote me on this one) that some parts are from Ford in the Mazda vehicle. Not 100% but I do know for a fact that Mazda and Ford have done some swapping even thought Mazda was the only one taking the Parts and Ford did not ANYWAY, another reason why I would recommend the Jetta overt he protege is the fuel consumption and oil. I know the 2.0L in the Jetta is VERY fuel efficient, I know because I had a 2001 Golf GLS for 5 years and I gave it to my younger brother (20) for school because it’s so good on gas. Oil is another advantage, it doesn’t use syntic oil compared to others with turbos or V6’s due to the simple design in the engine (simple is good).
One thing that goes against the Jetta is certain maintenance costs. Though the basics are well…priced basic. There are certain check-ups that you will encounter which may be a lil pricy (like say if you reach the 110,000km (I use metric) mark then you’ll have a more adnavced check-up. But that’s of course rare. But it does depend how often you drive your vehicle.
Overall, it’s a good vehicle.

Q: How much does a new or used manual transmission for a 2003 Volkswagen Jetta cost?
I drive a 2003 Volkswagen Jetta with a manual transmission. I pulled to a stop light today and when i went to move forward the car wouldnt budge. I did everything to try and get it to move, and then to try and push it off the road, no luck.
The mechanic believes the synchro is broken and i may need a new transmission. How much would a new or used transmission for my vehicle cost me?

A: VERY unlikely!!! More likely your shift cable or linkage is out of whack. Might even be clutch fluid contamination. I would be really surprised if you have a gear problem, unless th trans was run dry, without proper VW gear oil in it. If it IS the trans, try Parts Place for all Volkswagens in Pontiac, Mi. 1-248-373-2300. They will have perfectly good used and new units. Good Luck!!!

Q: Convert a Volkswagen Jetta from automatic to manual?
Yea so my parents are handing me down there old Jetta and its in great condition considering its about 8 years old. Only problem is that it’s automatic and I really don’t like driving automatic. How much do you think Volkswagen would charge me to have it changed to manual? Is it even possible?

A: anything is possible, but that is highly improbable. The parts alone would run you over $1000 on top of the labor. And thats if the car comes from the factory with all the required tapped holes in the firewall for the pedals, master cylinder, along with the shift linkages. My advice would be to leave it alone. I was going to do this to my Eclipse I had, but once you realize how much time and money is involved, it just isnt worth it. If you want a manual real bad, just trade in the auto for one. No sense in butchering up a perfectly good car, Hope this helps, good luck to ya!

Q: What do you think of the Volkswagen Jetta?
I am considering a 2008 Jetta for my next car. I want to get it before the Sign and Drive offer is over. I have never had a Volkswagen. Please share your experiences. Thanks!

A: I am going to pick up several negative feedback on this one but I don’t like it. I worked on both VW and Audi. Having worked on several other cars, I find them poorly designed. The only positive thing I can say is the cars use German parts. Very little problem with bolts breaking off during repair.

Many unreliable electronic parts are used and they just cause problem on high mileage cars. The in dash display looses pixels, and the ABS modulator goes out frequently. Ignition coils goes out randomly and the engine computer isn’t smart enough to detect which one.

The timing belt service is twice as expensive than other cars because you have to take one side of the front bumper and swing it out of the way. This adds additional 2 – 3 hours of labor compare to other cars.

It is a nice car to drive. Its got that heavy Euro engineered feeling, but way too unrelable.

Q: How many miles would a 2005 volkswagen jetta gls last me?
Im thinking about buying a 2005 volkswagen jetta gls and i just wanna know how many miles can i expect it to last before i start having some serious problems

A: i just put a motor in my 96 …only because i needed to put in a transmission, it ran great with 170,000 i only changed it because i got a great deal with the trans. 50,000 miles for $900.
